Mechanical watches have longer lifespans than that of quartz watches. A mechanical watch can last indefinitely with proper care and servicing. Should it break down , parts are always available for repair. A mechanical watch can become a collectible and it can fetch high resale value due to its rarity. A quartz watch on the other hand features electronic circuitry that has a limited lifespan. You cannot repair it because the electronic components for it would be obsolete by then.

Lastly, a mechanical watch is not as sensitive to extreme cold temperature as quartz watches. In extreme cold, the mechanical watch still keeps working while the cold will temporarily shut down the battery of the quartz watch.

A tuning fork shaped crystal is used in most modern quartz watches. Thin sheets of quartz are plated like an integrated circuit and chemically engraved to make these crystals. To keep good indifferent time depends on the initial frequency accuracy, precision of the angle of quartz cut with respect to the crystalline axis. The accuracy is also affected by the amount of contamination allowed to get through the encapsulation to and onto the surface of the crystal.

The ring of the crystal comes from the oscillation created by the electronics inside the watch amplifying internal noise. Converting this to digital circuits, by pulsation, you have the digital watch process. Digital watches are becoming increasingly popular because of their accuracy and variety in designs.

Today most of the quartz in watches has one-second pulses, which are driving a small electric motor that connects to gears to move the hands on the face. With the exception of the Rolex, who uses perpetual movement innovation, this is what gives the movement in quartz watches today.

How And Why Wrist Watches Were First Created

The first watches were pocket watches used by rich men. A popular fashion item among gentry they were kept in the top pocket of a long waistcoat.

The first wristwatches were worn by women as fashion accessories. They were small and designed to look delicate on a female’s wrist. As many new fashion statements are they were very expensive and worn primarily by society women in order to show off their wealth. Surprisingly they were not considered practical and rather just a fad that people would soon get bored with. Of course this was not the case. Wristwatches really started to be used as a practical item during the Boer war and even then it could be claimed that it was accident. What they actually did was strap their pocket watches around their wrists in order to be able to tell the time quickly. It was not until 1915 when Rolex decided it the right time to introduce them into the market. These wristwatches came with leather straps and much like the watches today they had a buckle to fasten them. These proved a success and the age the wristwatch was born.

The real turn around for watches again was the war. Heroes were returning from the Great War sporting wristwatches and an item deemed originally to be for women suddenly had masculine connotations. It soon became apparent that wristwatches were far more practical than pocket watches and they quickly took over the market place.

In the evolution of watch and clock making, mechanical clocks became the foundation upon which other types of watches and clocks were made. The theory that a mechanical mechanism could "tick" of time in specific, set increments is the basis of both the quartz watch and the atomic clock.

The Quartz Watch

The Americans, Swiss and Japanese all played a part in the invention of the quartz watch. One of the first quartz watches ever built for mass market distribution was made by the Sinclair Company. It had the right idea, using quartz crystals to complete an electrical circuit that would move a mechanical movement in precise increments, but the outer casing and primitive use of the quartz proved disastrous.

Sinclair's "Black Watch" was a digital model quartz watch that was introduced in 1975. It had all kinds of problems from losing or gaining time during the changes in hot and cold weather to creating static that would affect its time keeping abilities simply by walking on nylon carpet or having static due to clothing or air conditioning. In addition, it had a battery that could only hold a charge for 10 days. There appeared to be as many returns of this watch as there were sales!

The quartz watch was still a desirable option to explore and many other companies had models of digital quartz watches in the experimental stages and ready to sell. However, the reliable early quartz watches were still about $125 or more -- very expensive for the mid-1970s. These newer, more expensive watches were at least able to keep good time. In fact all well-made quartz watches kept very accurate time and in 1976 Texas Instruments introduced a model at the Chicago Consumer Electronic Show that could be produced in mass quantities for a mere $20.

The makings of a quartz watch started with the first watch battery in 1954. Next came the development of the integrated circuit in 1959. With light-emitting diodes (LED)being developed around 1962, all of the elements were in place for a digital quartz watch. In fact, the very first prototype, the Beta 21, came out in 1967. The development of liquid crystal displays (LCD) in 1968 gave digital watches the look they have today. Pulsar is credited with creating the first digital watch in 1970.

The Atomic Clock

Universal time is measured by an atomic clock which runs by using the element, cesium, to keep it going. Just one gram of cesium is enough of a "fuel" to run an atomic clock for one year. Cesium is found in granite and the one gram supply can be extracted from a piece of granite that is about a cubic foot in size.

This silvery metal is in liquid form at room temperature and is considered the most electropositive and alkaline element in the periodic table. It is used as a catalyst in photoelectric cells to react with hydrogen and create the necessary movement of the atoms which create a microwave frequency and natural resonance to define a single second. This cycle used to measure a second is actually made up of exactly 9,192,631,770 oscillations of the cesium atom's resonant frequency.

Wrist watches have been used by the majority of the population for only fifty years. Pocket watches were the most prevalent timepiece before the wrist watch. The earlier watches were all based on a mechanical drive mechanism, where there was a power source (spring), and oscillating mass, hands, face and a gear system to ensure the accuracy of the time piece. All in all, many moving parts that had a tendency to wear out and need to be replaced. Improvements were made to these designs, but the quartz movement was a radical change.

In the 1960s, quartz was discovered to have useful properties in providing a reliable oscillation source. Quartz had been used to give accurate frequencies in the radio transmitting and computer industries. All that was need was to find the correct type of quartz. Quartz is made up of the same compound as sand - silicon dioxide. It is stable with most solvents and it is heat resistant to reasonably high temperatures. However, the characteristic that makes quartz effective in the watch industry is that when compressed or bent, a voltage is generated on the surface and conversely, when a voltage is applied the quartz will change its shape. This is called the piezoelectric effect.
